How to ease anxiety? Tips from one of the best rated senior living communities in Coimbatore

Seniors are at high risk of anxiety-related disorders. If the problem is not addressed properly, it may escalate, leading to health complications. As one of the best-rated senior living communities in Coimbatore, we discuss some useful tips to help seniors deal with anxiety before it becomes a serious problem. Spend time with yourself: Taking out time for yourself is the best way to calm your nerves and feel at ease. Practising yoga, listening to music, meditating, getting a soothing massage or practising breathing exercises are some of the ways to help you relax. Also, if you start your day on a positive note, there is a good chance you will feel less stressed and anxious for the rest of the day. At our senior care homes in Coimbatore, residents start their day with stretching and breathing exercises. These exercises help the mind and the body to relax and rejuvenate. Eat healthy: The better you eat, the better you feel. Eating healthy food not only helps you feel energetic but also boosts your mental health. As you age, eating healthy keeps your blood sugar steady, thus helping you stay energetic throughout the day. Also, don’t rely on caffeine to deal with anxiety and stress as too much caffeine intake can make you feel dehydrated and make symptoms of anxiety worse. Pen down your feelings: Jotting down your thoughts can help you feel less anxious about things that worry you. Writing also helps you to see your problems from different perspectives. Another way to feel positive about yourself and your life is to make gratitude notes. This helps you focus on the positives of your life. You can also read stories of people who have dealt with pain and stressful situations successfully. Their learnings will help you find strength during difficult times. Spend time with family and friends: Having a support system helps you get through stressful times easily. At our senior homes in Coimbatore, we encourage residents to invite their family and friends over for movie screenings, dinner parties and birthday celebrations. This helps them stay connected. During the COVID-19 pandemic, our wellness team has taken the initiative of helping residents understand how video calls and social media can help them catch up with family and friends. 4 Factors that Should Define Your Retirement Planning Strategy: Tips From Retirement Home

Retirement, when planned well, can be the best period of your life. The sooner you start planning, the better are your chances of spending your golden years on your terms. In addition to making financial provisions for retirement, you also need to plan for emotional and practical factors. Here are 4 important factors you must consider to enjoy successful and fulfilling retirement years: Factor 1: Finances: Take an objective view of your present situation – check your current expenses, investment returns and the current size of your retirement savings. To enjoy a financially independent life after your retirement, you can work with a financial planner who will take a look at your present financial situation, your retirement goals (like moving to a retirement home or travelling to new places) and what you need to do to achieve those goals. If you are planning to move to a retirement home, you need to consider financial factors like cost of moving, monthly fees and membership fees.  In India, the monthly cost of staying in a senior living community can range from Rs 10,000 to Rs 40,000, depending on the services provided and the location. Factor 2: Location: Moving to a new house after retirement is disruptive and costly. So it’s important to get it right the first time. You need to analyse the things you like about your current location and those that you don’t. Check whether the new location you are planning to move to has amenities that will help you pursue activities that you enjoy. If you like art, check whether the location you are moving to has museums and galleries nearby. Factor 3: Worry-free Lifestyle: Household chores such as cooking and cleaning the house can take the fun out of the golden years. Many retirement homes offer these facilities to their residents. In our senior living facilities, residents can enjoy their life to the fullest. With dining, home maintenance and housekeeping taken care of, you will have more time to participate in clubs and enjoy meeting like-minded residents. While visiting different senior living communities, ask the staff about housekeeping and maintenance services offered and the monthly fees you have to pay to avail these services. Factor 4: Emotional support: Even if you are looking forward to the positive change retirement will bring to your life, it can be emotionally challenging at times. In such times, a sense of community can boost your overall morale and help you enjoy your retired life. Senior living communities offer a host of activities to help their residents enjoy every day. They also host different clubs and societies – many of which are run by residents themselves. Be it yoga classes, art and dance workshops or excursion trips – activities and trips give structure and purpose to daily life. Often after retirement, seniors complain of their days being endlessly the same. However, living in a retirement home that offers an active social calendar can transform a senior’s lifestyle and help them stay connected with others in the community. Senior Housing Outlook for 2021

January 18, 2021

Categories : Senior living tips

Mohit Nirula, CEO, Columbia Pacific Communities

To logically predict the outlook for the senior living sector in 2021, one must examine the various factors that have been impacting society over the last couple of decades and how the once in a lifetime event of 2020 will lift the senior living sector to a completely changed paradigm. Baby boomers (born between 1946 and 1964) and Generation X (born between 1965 and 1980) are increasingly finding themselves living on their own. This is a function of two distinct sociological changes that have been taking place in the country over the past couple of decades. In the first place, this generation has given their children the advantage of improved access to quality education. This combined with greater employment opportunities across India and other parts of the world have allowed the children to pursue better and more rewarding careers while taking them away from the home city of their parents. At the same time, better medical facilities, a healthier lifestyle, improved savings, and an aspirational approach to living means more and more “seniors” prefer to live independently, pursue their interests and passions with great vigour after their formal retirement and have the means, the time and the energy to do so. However, with time, these seniors increasingly need to depend on external service providers to support and fulfil their daily needs. This applies as much to security, housekeeping and maintenance requirements as it does to travel for socialising and their medical needs. What the seniors need is an enabler. A service provider who fulfils their day-to-day needs; and a living space that provides them with the necessary infrastructure to enjoy a socially engaging lifestyle. The same space and service provider should also be able to address their current and emergent medical needs. Given that physical, mental, intellectual, and spiritual needs change over time, the community and services provider should also be able to adapt and enhance support over time. Well designed and serviced senior living communities are the solution to this requirement. Even before 2020, it was estimated that there was a demand for 200,000 homes in senior living communities in urban India. At that time, less than 20,000 homes – half ready-to-move-in and the other half in various stages of development were available in the country. COVID – 19 and the lockdowns in 2020 exposed how ill-prepared we are as a society to look after the needs of our seniors – especially as they become dependent on others for their daily living. Seniors residing alone in their homes – individual villas or in apartments in mixed-family condominiums found themselves completely at the mercy of others. Their children, unable to travel themselves or provide any assistance from afar were equally distraught at their helplessness. When compared against the experience of seniors living on communities designed to fulfil their needs, the contrast was palpable. Good senior living communities were able to ringfence their residents from the external environment. Continued social interaction with like-minded neighbours and friends while maintaining physical distancing ensured there was no loneliness. Round-the-clock availability of medical support provided peace of mind to residents and their children. It is this experience that is now driving the 4x increase in demand and interest as seen by the velocity in sales in new projects, waiting lists for rental or re-purchase at ready to move in communities, organic traffic to website and support of both friends and family of seniors seeking such a solution. Since senior living communities are a complex combination of real estate, hospitality services and healthcare, with their unique and core specializations, one expects to see more collaborative efforts between developers and service providers as they synergise their competencies to develop solutions for residents. Senior living communities, until recently have been confined to areas outside the heart of the cities or in smaller towns / suburbs. These will change with developers seeing them as an important part of the integrated townships that they develop. I am convinced that given the size of the demand, the real need for this solution, and the growing acceptance of the concept, 2021 will see senior living communities shedding their wholly undeserved perception of being a solution for people who have “no option” to being the “preferred solution” for seniors wanting to enjoy life to the fullest.
